About the Class

Ages 16 and up

Beginner Friendly

Learn to applique the easy and perfect way! This class will teach you how to applique using the back basting method. With this method you will eliminate the need for templates! This gives you an easy to sew, portable project. Sewing down of the pieces will be done by needle turn hand applique. The results are beautiful and of heirloom quality. Our emphasis will be smooth, round edges and points! You will learn all the steps from tracing your pattern to sewing the block. This method of applique is addictive and before you know it, you will have appliqued enough blocks for a wall hanging or even a full sized quilt! Students will complete and learn the technique for one 18 inch block. Kay will give direction on how to continue and complete a larger project.

What you need to bring:

Students will have one hour for lunch so plan to bring or buy your lunch.

Class Supply List:
One 26 inch square of white/cream print or solid
Two fat quarters or a half yard, green print
Two fat quarters or a half yard, red print
Pins
Blue fabric marker (Walmart has these!)
Fabric scissors
Matching cotton thread (for leaves and flowers)
Optional: light box (Instructor will bring hers if you need to borrow!)
Small pillow to rest wrists
Pattern will be provided by instructor.

No sewing machine necessary, as all sewing will be done by hand.

Kay L. Butler

Kay began her quilting journey 30 years ago when she first made an Amish crib quilt for her newborn daughter. The quilting stitches of that little Amish quilt were real toe catchers, but that first project fueled a lifelong passion of quilt adventures and quilting projects. Kay is a past president of the Heartland Quilt Guild of the Eastern Shore and the Helping Hands Quilt Guild of Dover. She is presently a member of five quilt guilds! She is an avid antique quilt collector, quilt historian and conservator and is a member of the American Quilt Study Group. She has taught in the Caroline County School for 31 years and is now embracing her retirement years teaching the next generation about quilting. Kay enjoys making patterns from antique quilts and reproduces those patterns with modern fabrics.
