The Fiber Arts Center Presents The
WPA Reproduction Quilts Project Show

Quilters were among the artists and artisans employed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) between 1935 and 1942 as part of the Roosevelt Administration’s Second New Deal.

In 1989, The WPA Museum Extension Project, Langhorne, PA, was researched and published by the Variable Star Quilt Guild and the Generational Resources Exchange. The product of their research included 30 quilt designs.

In 2022, thirteen members of the Olde Kent Quilters Guild, under the guidance of Elizabeth Pauley Teletski, undertook to honor the work and artistry of those quilters by creating these new quilts from their patterns.

The Olde Kent Quilters Guild is a member of the Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore and was founded in Chestertown, Maryland, on the Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, in 1995 and currently has approximately 80 members.

The WPA Reproduction Quilts Project Show will be on exhibit at the Fiber Arts Center from January 17 through March 9, 2024. The show is free and open to the public during our regular hours of Wednesdays through Saturdays, 12:00 – 4:00pm.

YARNSTORMING 2024

Adkins Arboretum is partnering with local yarn artists and the Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore (FACES) to create an exciting visual experience in the trees around the Arboretum Visitor’s Center. The bright colors and whimsical designs will be on view from February 29 through April 6th. Knitters and crocheters are invited to decorate an Arboretum tree with their creations. 

New this year:

Prizes will be awarded to the following categories: Best Collaboration, Most Funtastic, Colorfully Creative, and Artistic Excellence. Award winners will be chosen by FACES Board Member Alice Engle.

Fiber artists will have the option to sell their Yarnstorming displays. They are also invited to share samples of additional yarn work to be considered for sale in our gift shop throughout the exhibit by emailing Visitor Services Coordinator Michelle Draper at mdraper@adkinsarboretum.org. Artists are responsible for pricing their work; the Arboretum will take a 30% commission on all sales.

To participate in Yarnstorming:

Visit the Arboretum to select your Yarnstorming tree. Be sure to check in at the front desk when you arrive to receive a map and a Sharpie. 

Yarnstorming trees will be marked with twine and numbered tree ring circles. When you pick your tree, use your Sharpie to write your last name under the number and reserve your tree. If a tree already has a name on it, it’s been taken!

Return to the front desk to write your full name and email address on our artist list. You will need to remember the number of your tree!

A Google form will be emailed to you asking for more information about your project.

If you cannot visit the Arboretum in person, email Jenny Houghton at jhoughton@adkinsarboretum.org for photos of the trees and a link to the Google form.

When planning your project, please adhere to the following guidelines:

For the health of our trees and wildlife, refrain from using glitter, wire, mesh, plastics, nails, or tacks.
All work must be safely reachable by an 8′ ladder.
Installations should be in trees only and not extend to surrounding shrubs.
Yarn art may be installed from Saturday, February 17, through Sunday, February 25th, during our Visitor’s Center hours – Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. and Sunday noon–4 p.m.

The reception for Yarnstorming is Sunday, March 3

The Fiber Arts Center will be well represented in Yarnstorming this year at Adkins Arboretum.  Pictured above are outfits for our Dogwood’s branches #1, #5 and the crotch of the tree.  In all, we have 9 fiber artists creating works for our beautiful tree.

The Fiber Arts Center Presents Something New – “Sit N Knit with Alice”

Bring your knitting or crochet project to the Fiber Arts Center for a perfectly marvelous session of yarn making with other like minded wool lovers.  While not a class, this is an opportunity to tune out the world and just sit and knit/crochet with support from Alice if you are having any issues, and enjoy the camaraderie of needle and hook enthusiasts.  We will gather in the upstairs library/class room.

Date:  February 7, 2024

Time:  10:00am  – 3:00pm

Cost:  $5.00 Members, $10.00 Non Members

UFO Stitching Groups
If you buy 3 sessions of UFO, you get the 4th one for free!

These fiber artists meet to finish “Unfinished Objects”, in other words, if you have a project that you need time to finish, then this is the event for you! For three consecutive days you can work on your own sewing projects and enjoy the fun and camaraderie of other stitchers. The best thing is that you can leave your machine and materials overnight. 

The following dates have been reserved at the Fiber Arts Center   

2024 Dates:   Feb. 6-8, Feb. 20-22, March 5-7, March 19-21, April 9-11, April 23-25, May 7-9, May 21-23

There are waiting lists for some dates.

Another Beginning Needlepoint 
(2 hour sessions)

March 14th and March 28th, 2024, 10:00 am -12:00pm

Session 1

You will learn the Half Cross stitch and the Tent(Continental) Stitch by making two coasters on plastic canvas and then start on a needlepoint canvas bookmark.

Session 2  You will learn the Basketweave Stitch, making another plastic canvas coaster, finish the bookmark and start on a 4” X 4” needlepoint.

Cost is $25/Members $35/Non Members.  Supplies are $15 payable to Victoria. Limit 8 students.  Please bring small scissors. Contact Victoria 410-253-9716

Another Needlepoint Sampler 2- 2 hour sessions

March 14th and March 28th, 1:00 – 3:00pm

Sessions continuation of Fall Sampler class. You will be working on the canvas that you worked on in the Fall. Please bring your notebook.  You will collaborate on designs for your 25 sampler blocks using Victoria, our library, and other students. $15 plus yarn. If you are a new Needlepoint Sampler Student, you must have already taken Beginning Needlepoint 1 and 2 or talk to Victoria.

Adelina’s Flower Garden is a mid-nineteenth century New York appliqued quilt with a folk art appearance to the blocks. You will have the opportunity to create this lovely quilt as we delve into the world of back basting applique. The floral quilt contains 12 applique blocks each measuring 22 inches square. For the first session, we will be focusing on four floral blocks.

Class Supply List:

If you wish to complete the entire quilt you will need:

9 yards of background fabric

Green fabric: 2 yards

20 fat quarters of blues, yellows, pink, purples, oranges

Needles: sharps #10

Applique Pins

Blue water soluble pens (these can be purchased at Walmart)

Matching thread for flowers/baskets(100% cotton)

Embroidery scissors

Optional: light box and light box

This quilt is based on a 1930s 5 pointed star from Texas. In the 1930s every scrap of fabric commonly called “strings” was used to create quilts. We will learn in class the techniques used to create string quilts and the layout for the completion of this large quilt or using the techniques for a smaller version.

Supplies

6 yards of back ground fabric. This amount is for the completed star. You will only need to bring about 1 yard of back ground to class

Scraps and “strings” of fabric for the star pieces. You will need some pieces longer than 10”. Strings were the long leftovers on the sides when clothing was cut out of yardage. Bring a container full.

A thin Sharpie marker.

Sewing machine

Rotary cutter and mat and at least 12” ruler.

1/4” add on ruler IF YOU HAVE ONE. Do not go out and buy. Scissors and pins

Picking the scraps and background:

The easiest way to pick your scraps is to have a theme such as 1930s reproduction fabric with white back ground, or patriotic scraps with blue back ground, or something modern such as Kaffe or Tula,or black and white scraps with a white back ground, or Civil War scraps with an off white background. Finally an assortment of any scraps with any back ground will always work. You can throw some solid scraps in also. What to do if you don’t have scraps? Just cut strips randomly from purchased fabric. Have a good assortment.

Hutton Lancaster Legacy Quilt Class

January 27, Feb. 24, March 23, and April 27, 2024

Time: 10-2

Cost: $60/$75

We will be teaching this wonderful 1846-1847 signature album quilt which was made originally by family members and friends of Benjamin and Susanna Hutton, a Quaker couple who lived in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The original quilt has 36 applique blocks and measures 100 inches x 104 inches. We will focus on completing 12 of those applique blocks and will learn the back basting method of hand applique.  Please contact Kay Butler to sign up at 410/829-5136.

Beginning Crochet Class

Learn to crochet with instructor Alice Engle.

Under the tutelage of instructor, Pam Sullivan, students will construct a beautiful  folded fabric kimono to be made into a wallhanging where you can make as many kimonos as you desire. 

Class Supply List:

1 fat quarter or quarter yard cut per kimono

Background fabric: 7 inch square per kimono

All fabric should be 100% cotton.

Students will need fabric for sashing, borders and backing. The amount will vary depending on the size they choose to make their wallhanging. (Contact Pam Sullivan to discuss the amount of fabric needed.
