January President’s Message

Good news! We have taken possession of the upstairs front room!  You are invited to come see the “before”. Warning it’s pretty rough around the edges but the streaming sunlight in the room foretell of the amazing happenings that will take place. We welcome your ideas. Some of you have already seen the possibilities. We are lining up a carpenter and painter. Here we go!

There is progress on the Richard Potter House next door and the deconstruction of the 1900 section part of the house has been approved by the Maryland Historic Trust. So now, we will be able to reveal the true 1820 part of the house that was Richard Potter’s. Crowbars move slowly but at least there is movement.

More good news! We have already reached 120 placemats of our 150 goal for Meals on Wheels. Thank you so much to those of you who have or already have or have even considered taking your precious time and resources to help others. We smile when we see the growing stack of beautiful placemats- different colors, shapes, sizes, bindings, quilting- about as different as all of us are : )

We are making headlines even across the Bridge with Cathy Spence’s Coverlet Exhibit. She has a wealth of knowledge on the cards printed beside these beauties and if you catch her at the Fiber Arts Center, where she often is, you can get a personalized history of the making of coverlets. She has attended “Coverlet College”( yes, there is such a thing) for many years and her passion is contagious.  Along with Cathy’s collection there is also a small example of our antique clothing from as early as the late 1700’s, featuring quilted petticoats and even a fur muff for these cold January days.

Our classes and UFO’s are filling so if you see something you would like to take don’t hesitate to call Kay. As always you are welcome to come, chat, and be surrounded by wonderful fiber art in one of the only places that focuses on just that!

Take care of yourselves and each other,

Victoria

The Fiber Arts Center Presents
The Winter Coverlet Collection of Catherine K. Spence

Dates: January 4, 2023 through February 25, 2023

The Fiber Arts Center is open Wednesday through Saturday 12:00-4:00.

Dated coverlets in the collection range from the late 1830’s to 1850’s. Coverlets are woven bedcovers used as the topmost covering on a bed. The weaver worked on a loom to construct the textile itself one row at a time, and the pattern was woven in as part of the process. You will see beautiful overshot coverlets that were fashioned on weaving looms and are geometric in design incorporating a wide variety of stripe, square, diamond, medallion and other patterns.

You will also see double weave geometric, summer winter, and star work coverlets: and Jacquard coverlets. Come visit this beautiful textile display and be mesmerized by their beauty! The exhibit is free.
