A March note from the Fiber Arts President:

March is women’s history month and also the month of National Quilting Day. Far too often the accomplishments of women have gone uncelebrated.  The Fiber Arts Center is playing an important role in celebrating the accomplishments of Ellie Brocklehurst. Her body of work is a testament to the art of quilting that she has accomplished over many decades. On a television editorial this month, it was said that the mission this month is to reflect and inspire aspirations of the future by leaning on the successes and triumphs of the past. I encourage you to bring your family, your neighbors, your co-workers and your congregation to come and marvel at the talent and skill that Ellie’s quilts embody.  I also encourage you to take your quilts out of their trunks and closets and display them and educated others of all genders on the amount of time and talent to takes to create them.  Traditionally women’s work, the practical side of making quilt for warmth has morphed into a true art form. But because it is so often accomplished by women, it is far too often gone overlooked and uncelebrated. The mission is to celebrate and change the image of “those old blankets that she worked on” and no one who sees Ellie’s quilts will ever say that again.  Honor the amazing efforts of all fiber artists every month by giving them their well-deserved acclaims. Have a wonderful month and my wish for you is to have time for your endeavors.

Peace and prayers for Ukraine,

Victoria McConnell

Yarnstorming – a partnership between Adkins Arboretum and the
Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore

March 6 through April 3, 2022

Dragon Artists Kathleen McCulloch and Victoria McConnell decorated their tree as active board members of The Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore, where Victoria serves as President and Kathleen as the Outreach Coordinator.

Victoria has mastered the art of circular weaving with yarn and has recently taken up knitting in addition to her passion for quilting and dyeing fabric, recently snow-dyeing hues of reds and blues on Kona cotton.

Kathleen was taught to knit by her mother as a child and has a serious affliction with hoarding yarn, which some knitters politely refer to as a “stash”.
