Weather Announcement – In anticipation of a strong storm on Saturday, January 29th,
the Fiber Arts Center will be closed.

FACES continues to operate in a Covid-19 conscious environment. We require all of our unvaxed visitors to wear a mask and practice social distancing.

Our current days and hours are Wednesday, 12-4:00pm, Thursday, 12-4:00pm, Friday, 12-4:00pm and Saturday, 12-4:00pm.

A January note from the Fiber Arts President:

As the temperatures tumble, our thoughts can too with Covid swirling around us like so many snowflakes. We are doing our best to keep our spirits up with a terrific show of Jeanne Hechmer’s creative works. Come plan to spend some time as each of her quilts has a story and message to tell. She is offering a design class to help you tell your own story.

We wear our masks, socially distance and make prudent decisions about when to mingle with family, friends and community. At the Fiber Arts Center, we are sanitizing from top to bottom – tables, chairs, lights switches and doorknobs – working hard to keep our members and visitors safe and happy when they visit or take classes with us. Speaking of classes, six new classes are on the schedule, all with limited enrollment to keep everyone safe. UFO’s are also booking but we are mindful of safe numbers and distancing there also. So, sign up as soon as you decide to come.

We can hardly wait for our January Quiltfolk Magazine to reach us. We have ordered extra copies for the Fiber Arts Center. Quite a few of our members are featured on those pages! Get those autograph pens out!

As president, I want to thank the new all-volunteer Fiber Arts Center Board of directors and the supporting members so much because in the short eight months that we have been working on this endeavor, we have accomplished so much and we have had so much fun doing it. And I can hear Kay Butler saying, “And you just ain’t seen nothing yet, sister!.”

Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore Presents

Becoming A Fiber Artist – Jeanne Bosse Hechmer

Jeanne is a lifelong resident of Easton, Maryland. She graduated from Salisbury State College and went on to teach middle school in Queen Anne’s County until
retiring in 1998.

Jeanne’s mother, an accomplished seamstress, taught her how to sew and do needlework. Jeanne sewed clothing and home decorating items for many years. She began quilting in 1980 and has made dozens of quilts and wall hangings.

She draws inspiration from nature, her religion, math, vintage odds and ends, and the work of other artists. Her fiber art pieces and wearables reflect her love of color,
fabric, fibers, beads and other embellishments.

Jeanne is a member of Bayside Quilters and has exhibited her work in their
shows and in local galleries.

The exhibit runs through the end of February, 2022. We welcome your visit on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 12:00 – 4:00pm each day.
The exhibit is free of charge.

Yarnstorming is back in 2022!

For the third year, The Fiber Arts Center will partner with host Adkins Arboretum for the very popular Yarnstorming at the Arboretum.

Also known as yarn bombing or graffiti knitting, this fun artform uses colorful yarn instead of paint or chalk. Knitters and crocheters are invited to cozy up to an Arboretum tree with their creations.

The Yarnstorming exhibit will be on display March 6 through April 3, with a reception planned for March 13. Click here to learn more, to register, and for photos from the 2021 exhibit.

Valentine Heart Table Runner Class

Get ready to set a romantic mood this Valentine’s Day and make your own Valentine’s Table Runner! Come join us at the Fiber Arts Center where teacher Priscilla Hodge will teach you how to make a heart filled table runner.

You will need heart fabric (1/3 yard cotton fabric, cut into 4, ten inch square or 4 ten inch squares of coordinating cotton fabric for hearts)

White/Cream background fabric (1 yard of white or cream cotton fabric that coordinates with the heart fabric, cut into five 2.5” width of fabric strips, two 5” width of fabric strips, cut into twelve 5” squares

Border Fabric (1/2 yard coordinating cotton fabric, cut into five 2/5” width of fabric strips

Binding Fabric (1/2 yard coordinating cotton fabric, cut into four 2.5” width of fabric strips

Backing Fabric (1.25 yards of coordinating cotton fabric

Cotton Batting (piece of batting that measures 20” wide by 54” long

Working sewing machine, coordinating cotton thread and basic sewing tools

Applique Quilt Class Just Announced!

Level: Beginner/Intermediate – In this class we will be completing four applique blocks to make a beautiful quilt wall hanging. Backbasting, needleturn, and glue basting applique will be the focus on constructing the blocks

UFO Stitching Groups

These fiber artists meet to finish “Unfinished Objects”, in other words, if you have a project that you need time to finish, then this is the event for you! For three consecutive days you can work on your own sewing projects and enjoy the fun and camaraderie of other stitchers. The best thing is that you can leave your machine and materials overnight. The following dates have been reserved at the Fiber Arts Center:

Jan. 10-12 Jan. 24-26 Feb. 14-16
Feb. 28-Mar 2 Mar. 14-16 Mar. 28-30
April 11-13 April 25-27

There are waiting lists for some dates.

Cost: $30 (for members only) New memberships welcome and you may join easily at the bottom of this newsletter.

These groups are filling up fast! You must have a reservation for these groups so that we can follow State Guidelines for social distancing.

Pricing will increase in 2022 from $25.00 to $30.00.

“Holiday Happenings”

In December, FACES hosted a group of 11 visitors from the “western shore” including Annapolis, Bowie, Columbia, Lanham, Crofton and Upper Marlboro.

They came to view and enjoy the 25 quilts in the American Quilt Study Group Exhibit “200 Years of Solid Color Quilts”, curated by FACES board member Kay Butler.

After a break to partake of some holiday treats, Kay joined with fellow board member Cathy Spence to present a selection of stunning antique quilts and woven coverlets from their personal collections.

The entire group indicated they are ready for another “road trip” to FACES to see what’s new in the world of fiber arts come spring!
