Dear Members,
Yesterday I had a holiday lunch with a good friend that works with Meals on Wheels near Dover. A few months ago, several of you and I had made placemats to give out to some of the recipients of their meals. I asked her how the placemats had been received and she winced and said that she thought she had explained to me that they really couldn’t give them out until they could give everyone a placemat because they talk to each other and feelings may be hurt.
“How many do you need?” I asked as we had given her about 20. One hundred and fifty was the number she told me. She said she had put the 20 in a safe place and was just waiting for more.
So….. here is the challenge. Can we make the 130 more placemats that they need by Mother’s Day? They should be 12” x 16” or an inch or two one way or another. They don’t have to match. They should have batting, backing and be bound. I found a set of blocks in a trunk that will never be a quilt that will be perfect for this. We also have some donated pieces of material at the Fiber Arts Center that have been designated for Meals on Wheels placemats if you would like to come and grab a handful to make some creative placemats or, of course, you can find some from your stash that are just waiting for this project.
To help keep us keep on track, I will make a board for the sandwich signs outside the Fiber Arts Center that will keep track of our progress to our 150 placemats.
I am just picturing these placemats brightening someone’s bed tray, TV tray, kitchen or dining table and making them feel a little more cared for and valued in this rush around world of ours. I hope you can take some of your valuable time to help with this challenge. Put it on your short list of resolutions. Making a placemat or two will probably be easier than eating less processed sugar, less chocolate, doing more exercise, drinking more water, consuming less salt, spending less time in front of the screen and all the other SHOULDS that you plan on. Thinking of the warm thoughts that you may give someone who is alone may warm your heart also.
Happy New Year, Victoria

The Fiber Arts Center Presents
The Winter Coverlet Collection of Catherine K. Spence
Dates: January 4, 2023 through February 25, 2023
The Fiber Arts Center is open Wednesday through Saturday 12:00-4:00.
Dated coverlets in the collection range from the late 1830’s to 1850’s. Coverlets are woven bedcovers used as the topmost covering on a bed. The weaver worked on a loom to construct the textile itself one row at a time, and the pattern was woven in as part of the process. You will see beautiful overshot coverlets that were fashioned on weaving looms and are geometric in design incorporating a wide variety of stripe, square, diamond, medallion and other patterns.
You will also see double weave geometric, summer winter, and star work coverlets: and Jacquard coverlets. Come visit this beautiful textile display and be mesmerized by their beauty! The exhibit is free.
