The kids are headed back to school so its time to get you some “me time” – lots of new classes to explore at FACES this Fall.

Dear Members,

     September is a month when it seems that life renews again. Students resume their routines, sports teams and television shows start new seasons. It’s time to look at goals! I encourage you to put your long-term goals somewhere on a high shelf in an obscure closet. Don’t plan on making quilts for the next three grandchildren or even finishing one quilt. Don’t plan on knitting a sweater or becoming a master weaver. Instead, break each one of your long-term goals down into very small achievable tasks. Focus on short-term. Celebrate small jobs that you can get done in the time that is available to you in a day or two.  While you are working on those small tasks be thinking about the next little job that will move you forward in some small way. At the end of the day, be proud of the progress you have made. 

       If you are like me (and most of the other people that I know) you have at least a dozen projects going at the same time, not to mention the obligations of family, health, spirit, house, garden, friends, work, etc.: I encourage you to do the same with all of those. Sometimes, by necessity, one needs more time and attention. Prioritizing and balancing is the juggling that we all work with to keep ourselves and everyone around us happy. Keeping your goals short-term can help you move toward your goals and see progress even though it will sometimes be in baby steps.

         One short term goal you should put on the list is to stop by and see Pam Sullivans’s exhibit.

We are delighted to showcase her precise hand appliqué and so many of her treasured works and collected quilts.  Also check out the wonderful set of classes that the Fiber Arts Center is offering.  UFO has also expanded to include the upstairs room and help is available for getting machines up the stairs if you need it. We are looking forward to the demolition of the second story of the Richard Potter House next door. Bids are coming in to see who will take on the job. But the Richard Potter House is a long-term goal that is lost on a closet shelf  – for now. It will be very exciting!

The Fiber Arts Center is excited to introduce Laura Boehl to you and for you to learn about her story as a modern quilt artist.

We match unfinished projects to volunteer finishers who complete and return the garments, blankets, & accessories, to their loved ones.

As a crafter, you understand that a handmade gift is priceless. The materials and hours that go into making something for a loved one are
a gesture of love. Your efforts will reconnect an individual with a garment or accessory that had been begun for them by a loved one who died or became ill mid-project.

Pam Sullivan’s “Collected and Created” show
will hang in the Fiber Arts Center Gallery through
October 28, 2023 and is free for all to view.

 

Pam Sullivan is a wife, a mother, and a grandmother. She is a daughter, a sister, and an aunt. She is a retired pediatric nurse. She is a Christian. And she is a quilter.
Pam loves quilts, she loves collecting antique quilts, and she loves making quilts.

Pam has a love for vintage quilts, and over the years she has been able to collect some, from doll-sized to bed-sized, and in between. She is quick to tell people that she has never paid more than $100 for a quilt, which makes her
(and her husband) very happy!

Pam enjoys reproducing vintage quilts, and has participated in tracing them, so that a pattern can be printed and other quilters can also reproduce the quilts. She has reproduced a couple of the quilts in her collection, as you will see in the exhibit.

Pam is a member of the Heartland Quilt Guild, The Eastern Shore Quilt Study Group, and the American Quilt Study group, as well as several local quilting bees. She hopes you enjoy seeing her quilts, “Collected and Created”.

UFO Stitching Groups

These fiber artists meet to finish “Unfinished Objects”, in other words, if you have a project that you need time to finish, then this is the event for you! For three consecutive days you can work on your own sewing projects and enjoy the fun and camaraderie of other stitchers. The best thing is that you can leave your machine and materials overnight.

Hutton Lancaster Legacy Quilt Class

The next round of classes will be held Sept. 1, Oct. 6, Nov. 3 and Dec. 1, 2023. THIS CLASS IS FULL.

Time: 10-2

Cost: $60/$75

We will be teaching this wonderful 1846-1847 signature album quilt which was made originally by family members and friends of Benjamin and Susanna Hutton, a Quaker couple who lived in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The original quilt has 36 applique blocks and measures 100 inches x 104 inches. We will focus on completing 12 of those applique blocks and will learn the back basting method of hand applique.  Please contact Kay Butler to sign up at 410/829-5136.

Sunflower Applique Quilt Class

The original sunflower quilt was made by Caroline M. Carpenter in 1865 who was from Northfield, Vermont. Many years later it was donated to the Shelburne Museum and is often times displayed there for the viewing public. Hoopla Patterns has patterned this beautiful treasure. The Fiber Arts Center has acquired permission to teach this fabulous quilt. The original was for a poster bed but we will be teaching this to fit a 78” x 84” quilt. Patterns need to be purchased from instructor Kay Butler.

Another Sunflower Session has been added on Sept. 9 and October 28th

Cost: $45 (members); $55 (nonmembers). The cost of the pattern is $25.

Carpenter Square Quilt Class with instructor Alice Kish

Based on an antique blue and white quilt, this 69″ x 69″ intricate looking design of interlocking pieces can be easily made using rotary cutting and machine piecing. Nine large blocks sewn only with straight lines create this masterful design when sewn together. Come join us to stitch this amazing quilt!

Dove Wallhanging or Pillow Class

The Christmas Dove Wall-hanging is paper pieced or foundation pieced. This is a good project for students who have taken basic sewing and can sew straight and even seams.  The Dove will be made using interfacing instead of paper preventing students from needing to remove paper once sewn.

Students will learn how to: estimate the amount of fabric needed for each piece; use an ADD-A-QUARTER ruler; use the Place, Fold, Check and Cut method of paper piecing; make a sleeve to hang Dove; and, make and sew on binding.
