Dear Members,

August is here and now that we are into the world of fiscal years, budgets and grants (and, oh so far from, fiber arts sometimes) there are many ups and downs. We are so fortunate to have such a supportive membership and so many volunteers willing to help that we have made a meteoric rise from where we were three years ago. Now that we are bigger, we have government paperwork, taxes, and grants. Most of the journey has been wonderful. Good friends and lots of laughter in the problem solving. But, it has not all been good. We were recently turned down for a grant to do some needed upgrades to the Hardee House, but we will find a way to make those improvements and improve our grant writing skills. We did just get a very complementary letter from the Executive Director of the Maryland State Arts Council congratulating us on our successes and promising to visit. So, the ups and downs of this rollercoaster keep rolling on.

Hopefully you are taking the ups and downs of your life in stride. Be sure to reach out to give a hand up to someone in need and don’t be too proud to reach out when you need one. All those types of motions help us hold the fibers of our lives together when we most need it.

In the meantime: wear a hat, put flowers on the kitchen table, eat a cucumber, put a stitch in something, and hug a friend! Balance is the key!

The Fiber Arts Center is excited to introduce Yolanda Acree to you and for you to learn about her story as a fiber artist in the realm of paper collage.

Yolanda’s story is the first of our four videos from the, “FACES Oral History Series, Part 2”,  chronicling the fiber arts journeys of some incredible makers from the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  These stories are made possible by a grant from the Maryland Heritage Area Authority through the Eastern Shore Heritage, Stories of the Chesapeake.  All four of the stories are posted to the “Home” page of our website www.fiberartscenter.com.

You can watch Yolanda’s story on our YouTube Channel at this active link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBA4VQJDPIU&t=95s

Benary Zinnias surround one corner of the Fiber Arts Center. Their cheerful, colorful blooms are poking through the railing on the front stoop and accent the bright blue building and they grow with wild abandon along the south side.  Turn around to the raised bed and you will see some very healthy cotton plants in full bloom. If you peer through the dappled leaves you will see the cotton bolls which will begin to produce their cumulonimbus clouds of cotton fluff in a few weeks if the squirrels don’t raid all of them for their protein rich cotton seed oil. Vinca, cosmos, and dianthus and making up most of the sunny front bed and hopefully the dark purple hollyhocks will make their scheduled appearance next year. The shady side with the barn blocks features some variegated hosta.   More hosta and some coleus are around the ramp and the rail boxes feature some different ornamental sweet potato, curry, dianthus, and petunias.
