Dear Members,

May is a month of growth and renewal as spring bursts on to the Eastern Shore.  Pat Tucker has a lovely show featuring some of her collection of antique quilts and also some of her own amazing work.  

Nine new classes are on our schedule.  The front flower beds have been planted along with the rail flower boxes, porch flower pots and raised beds for growing cotton.  Another raised bed has indigo, madder and red amaranth for our new experiments in natural dyes.

Kay has just renewed our collection of fabrics and books for sale.  We want to thank our wonderful members without whose enthusiastic support, we could not have made the growth that we have.  And we are so excited about what the future holds!

From May 4-July 2, the Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore will be featuring the Patricia Tucker Quilt Exhibit: For the Love of Quilts- The Stories Behind the Stitches.” 

Mrs. Tucker is a local quilter who belongs to the Heartland Quilt Guild and has been quilting for over 30 years. She believes that every quilt has its own story. She feels that as much as our Creator leaves His mark on each of us, a quilt-maker’s life and circumstances are often woven within the details of their renderings. She loves the mystery involved in revealing clues and insights found within the stitches and takes great joy in pondering the who’s, what’s, when’s, where’s, how’s and why’s of each maker and piece; many times discovering the extraordinary among the ordinary!

behind the stitches!

Raw Edge Tile Applique Class

Instructor: Candy Stiffler of Quilt Vine
Cost: Members $35, Non Members $45
Date: June 25, 2022       Time: 10-2:00pm

Class Description: In this class you will learn the method to make a Raw Edge Tile Applique quilt wallhanging. The patches in the quilt are raw edge applique and will fray when washed to create a beautiful dimensional quilt! You will choose from one of Quilt Vine’s Raw Edge Tile patterns. To obtain these call: 410-476-6166.  Candy will also have these available to sell at the Fiber Arts Center.

Rug Braiding Class

 Instructor: Alice Engle

Cost: $40.00 Member, $50.00 Non Member
Dates: Saturday, July 16 and Saturday, July 30, 2022
Time: 10:00am – 2:00pm

Come learn the traditional craft of rug braiding. You will learn to braid 3 fabric strips and sew them into a rug.

Supply List: 1/2 yard of 3 different colors of polar fleece cut into 1” strips. DMC #8 floss or cotton thread to match or blend with fabric.
Scissors
Instructor will offer other supplies for a small fee.

Patriotic Sampler Quilt Class

Instructor: Priscilla Hodge
Cost: $40 Member, $50 Non Member
Date: Session 1 July 21 and Session 2 August 18, 2022 Time: 10-3

Class Description: Students will celebrate their patriotism by learning techniques of how to sew patchwork and paper pieced quilt blocks as well as machine applique. There are four patchwork and five paper pieced blocks in the sampler. This is a great way to learn a myriad of stitching skills including using an Add-A- Quarter ruler and how to square off blocks. Come join us for two fun days of stitching the Red, White and Blue!

Patriotic Sampler Class Fabric Requirements and Supplies Needed:

Please wash and press all fabric so they will not bleed when sampler is washed. Use a Color Grabber in washer when you wash your fabrics.

Use Niagara Ironing Spray after washing fabric to make crisp cuts.

**Bring all your red, white, blue and patriotic fabric scraps for this project as well.

Fabric for Backing (red, white & blue flag pattern) 1 3/8 yards

Batting (prefer warm and natural) Two 36-inch squares

Outer Border & Sashing (Whit3e stars on white) 1 ½ yards

Inner Border (red stars with white on navy) ¼ yard

Cornerstones and blocks 1 & 2 (red solid) ¼ yard

Cornerstones (white stars on navy) Fat Quarter (Qtr) or 4” x 12” remnant

For remaining fabric in blocks:

Red print on red 5 Fat Qtrs

White print on White 6 Fat Qtrs

White stars on navy 1 Fat Qtr

White stars on red 1/8 yd

Medium sized red & white stars on navy 1 Fat Qtr

Light blue (with sparkle) 1 Fat Qtr or

4” X 15” remnant

Mini white dots/stars on red 1 Fat Qtr

Navy solid 1 Fat Qtr

Silver or white stars on navy 1/8 yard

Blue and red stars on white 1/8 yard

Dark blue pattern on royal blue 1/8 yard

Supplies Needed

Working sewing machine with manual, if available

Fabric listed on fabric requirements and supplies

Cotton thread. White will work the best for piecing.

White Isacord thread for appliqueing, if you have it.

Small scissors to cut threads

Fabric scissors

PAPER scissors

Tweezers

Rotary cutter with sharp blade (Bring EXTRA blades)

5 ½” x 7 ½” cutting mat

80/12 needles for patchwork blocks

90/14 Universal needle pack of 3 or more (Bring EXTRA needles for paper pieced blocks.)

Sharp pins. Long flathead pins work the best with paper piecing

Curved safety pins size 2 or 3 (at least 40)

Pin cushion

6” x 24” clear ruler

6 ½” square clear ruler to square up blocks or 9- or 12-inch square clear ruler-

I will have one 6 ½” square clear ruler in class

Add-A-Quarter 6 OR 12” Ruler- helps cut off ¼” seams for paper piecing

¼” presser foot, if you have one

Open-toe presser foot or a clear open-toe presser foot.

Walking foot to quilt sampler or a differential feed foot

Niagara Premium Ironing Spray (preferably spray bottle)- I will have one in class.

Suggest you bring:

ROLL’ N ROLL’N Press  Tool (available on Amazon)

Any other sewing supplies that you like to use.

A New Session of Baltimore Country Cousin
Applique Quilt Class Underway!
Dates:  March 25, April 29, May 27 and June 24, All on Fridays from 10:00 – 2:00pm
Cost for member: $60  Non-member: $75

Level: Beginner/Intermediate – In this class we will be completing four applique blocks to make a beautiful quilt wall hanging. Backbasting, needleturn, and glue basting applique will be the focus on constructing the blocks.  Pictured with finished blocks is Brenda Powers.

UFO Stitching Groups

These fiber artists meet to finish “Unfinished Objects”, in other words, if you have a project that you need time to finish, then this is the event for you! For three consecutive days you can work on your own sewing projects and enjoy the fun and camaraderie of other stitchers. The best thing is that you can leave your machine and materials overnight. 
The following dates have been reserved at the Fiber Arts Center   

June 13-15 & 27-29
July 11-13  & 25-27
August 8-10 & 22-24
September 12-14 & 26-28
October 10-12 & 24-26
November 7-9 & 21-23
December 5-7 & 8-9

There are waiting lists for some dates.

Cost: $30 (for members only) New memberships welcome and you may join easily at the bottom of this newsletter. These groups are filling up fast! You must have a reservation for these groups so that we can follow State Guidelines for social distancing.
