Dear Members,

Happy July! Growth! How important is it to keep being curious?! The Fiber Arts Center certainly has provided opportunities to expand one’s horizons. Alice Kish’s exhibit is full of fiber art in which she explores how to put color together. She is one who is constantly curious and through her exhibit the viewer gets to see some of her adventures into that curiosity. Be sure to check out the sweaters tucked into the corners.

Speaking growth? Have you seen the latest class list with 24 classes listed from two hour beginning sewing youth classes to 8 week knitting classes to applique? There is such a huge variety and it is growing by leaps and bounds.

The Fiber Arts Board of Directors is so pleased that Alice Kish and Laura Boehl have agreed to join our board. Their experience and enthusiasm will help us grow.

Personally, I am always excited to expand my skills. I take as many classes as I can and I am teaching a few. Needlepoint has been one of my latest teaching adventures. I have been doing needlepoint for over 50 years but to break it down to teach it has been a challenge. Yesterday, I taught beginning needlepoint for the second time and it was better than the first time. The students in the class have helped me improve my teaching immeasurably. My enthusiasm is my problem. I give too much information at one time.  I am growing and learning the pace of adult learners and the pace of learning fiber art. It was fun for all and we came away with plans for more classes and more ideas for ways to be curious about fiber art.

We at the Fiber Arts Center wish for you to be curious about whatever tickles your fancy. Throw yourself at it with wild abandon and just see what happens!

Be sure to take care of yourself and your loved ones,

Happy July,

Victoria McConnell

Sunflower Applique Quilt Class

The original sunflower quilt was made by Caroline M. Carpenter in 1865 who was from Northfield, Vermont. Many years later it was donated to the Shelburne Museum and is often times displayed there for the viewing public. Hoopla Patterns has patterned this beautiful treasure. The Fiber Arts Center has acquired permission to teach this fabulous quilt. The original was for a poster bed but we will be teaching this to fit a 78” x 84” quilt. Patterns need to be purchased from instructor Kay Butler.

Dove Wallhanging or Pillow Class

The Christmas Dove Wall-hanging is paper pieced or foundation pieced. This is a good project for students who have taken basic sewing and can sew straight and even seams.  The Dove will be made using interfacing instead of paper preventing students from needing to remove paper once sewn.

Students will learn how to: estimate the amount of fabric needed for each piece; use an ADD-A-QUARTER ruler; use the Place, Fold, Check and Cut method of paper piecing; make a sleeve to hang Dove; and, make and sew on binding.

Meet Our Teachers!

We are thrilled to welcome Karli Abbott into our roster of skilled and talented instructors at the Fiber Arts Center.   Karli has several classes coming up in September and October for the beginning quilter, including young people.  So please tell your friends that if they want to get started in quilting these classes will be an awesome entree.  Also, it would be a lot of fun for a mother/daughter or father/son experience and you take home a beautiful keepsake.

Kathleen took her first ever sewing/quilting class from Karli on July 29th, and made an Animal Silhouette Wallhanging featuring her beloved German Shepherd Dog, Apache.  Kathleen said of her experience, “Karlie not only taught me step by step, how to master basic sewing skills but also shared so many tricks and treats of the quilting world.  It was so much fun and I can’t wait to take another class with Karlie!”
